Hull based safety experts Arco have been continuing their work with Hull FC Community Foundation, proving that they are both playing a vital part when it comes to the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP)’s Skills Pledge Campaign.

The Skills Pledge Campaign encourages organisations to support the current and future workforce with pledges including supporting the development of employability skills, investing in increasing the skills of the workforce and offering Apprenticeships or Traineeships. Arco have been committed to the pledge since early in 2014 and since has developed a strong relationship with Hull FC Community Foundation, running three successful events to date.

Hull FC Community Foundation uses rugby league to engage, educate and inspire its students. Whilst undergoing further training, students are able to gain work experience and access to the working world through employer links.

To coincide with National Careers Week 2016, the current intake of students had the opportunity to see behind the scenes at one of the area’s largest distribution centres before undertaking a mock interview, delivered by a team of Arco volunteers.
James Peach, Business Improvement Partner at Arco said: “The partnership with Hull FC Community Foundation was an ideal one for us; it gives us the opportunity to introduce their students to our programme, illustrating the careers available to them both within Arco and in the wider business community.

“As a company we’re committed to providing opportunities for local young people, and our programme delivers mock interviews and skills workshops; we hope that it will create a pathway which may lead to a traineeships, apprenticeships and possibly full time employment. We’ve currently got our first student undertaking a ten week traineeship in our finance team. It would be great to see some of the Foundation students taking advantage of this opportunity”

Prior to the visit, students had been given guidance on how to apply for a role, in this case as a Warehouse / Production Operative. Students received advice and support on the interview process as for many this was their first experience. Similarly, staff from Arco who had volunteered their time were given support from the team to carry out effective interviews.
Emily Needham, IT Team Leader at Arco said: ”This is the third time I’ve volunteered to interview the students. I was looking for a way to expand my own skills and this is a great way to do that whilst giving something back.”

A representative from Comic Relief also took part in the day, gaining a firsthand insight into how Hull FC Community Foundation is using their funding to give young people a positive transition into the world of work.

Peter McCabe, Head of Hull FC Foundation said: “Our relationship with Arco has been fantastic, they’ve really understood what we were hoping to achieve. It’s great that our students have the opportunity to see behind the scenes on days like today and that they are able to have a proper job interview, following a formal process. The fact that it is actually delivered in the workplace by staff who have volunteered their time gives the whole process more relevance and helps to boost the confidence of our students.
Mike Parker, Chair of the Humber LEP’s Employment and Skills Board said: “We love to unearth stories like the one of the partnership between Hull FC Community Foundation and Arco. The work they are doing fits perfectly with the Skills Pledge campaign and reinforces the importance of business working in partnership with education and training providers.”
