The Convention of the North with NP11 will take place on Friday, September 13 in Rotherham – hosted by the Sheffield City Region.

Magna in Rotherham has been confirmed as the location for the event, hosted by the Convention of the North in conjunction with the NP11 and with support from Government.

The largest ever event of its kind, it will be a working Convention to debate policy through bringing together political, business, community and academic leaders from across the North of England, co-hosted by the NP11 group of all 11 Northern Local Enterprise Partnership Chairs, representing 16 million people, supported by Government and along with representatives of young people’s groups.

The summit is set to send a clear message to the new Prime Minister and Government about the North of England’s role in the future of the UK. Together the North will make a powerful, unified case to the new Prime Minister and Government for tangible investment in the Northern Powerhouse, putting it at the top of the economic agenda, so that it can fulfil its potentially transformational role in the future of the UK.

This conference precedes the Energy and Clean Growth in the Northern Powerhouse conference and exhibition, which will be held at Hull’s Bonus Arena on November 5-7, and will showcase the achievements and opportunities for energy, clean growth and decarbonisation in the North of England. It is being hosted by the Humber LEP on behalf of the NP11.

Chair of the Humber LEP, Lord Chris Haskins, said: “Collaboration across the North is hugely important for growing our economy.  On big issues like rail connectivity working together means we have a better chance of success.  For example, we see a lot of benefit in working with Tees Valley and the North East on energy where we have complementary specialisms, and with Liverpool on ports to improve connectivity across the Pennines.  This conference will be an opportunity to discuss these agendas, and will lay the groundwork for the Northern Powerhouse Energy and Clean Growth Conference we are hosting on behalf of the NP11 in November.”

Roger Marsh OBE, Chair of the NP11 and of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) said: “This Summit is very timely in bringing together private and public sector partners from across all of the North, alongside Government decision makers, to further our ambitions for extraordinary inclusive growth that will benefit all in society.

“Building a thriving and well-connected Northern Powerhouse is key to ensuring that we create a productive and successful post-Brexit Britain.  Ambitions to turbo-charge the North will only be achieved through effective collaboration and strong consensus across all of our great Northern towns, cities and rural communities.”

Northern Powerhouse Minister, Rt Hon Jake Berry MP, issued the following statement in support: “The world-class Magna venue in the heart of Yorkshire is a fitting place to host this landmark event.

“This summit in Rotherham will bring together the most diverse range of Northern Powerhouse thinkers, leaders and community champions ever seen to set the agenda for a thriving and prosperous Northern Powerhouse.”
