Please see below for our official response to the news a preferred buyer has been chosen for British Steel:
Chair of the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership and joint Chair of the British Steel Support Group, Lord Haskins, said: “We are encouraged with the news today that we are nearing the conclusion of the sale of British Steel, therefore securing thousands of jobs in Scunthorpe, as well as the livelihoods of the many businesses in British Steel’s supply chain that depend on the continuation of the steel industry in our region.
“British Steel is a vitally important business within the Humber economy, a major employer in North Lincolnshire that also supports a vibrant supply chain across the Humber.
“The Humber LEP has also been working closely with British Steel to develop proposals for the logistics hub as part of the Heathrow expansion plans and have made good progress to reach the final short-list.
“The Secretary of State for BEIS, appointed me as his joint chair of the British Steel Support Group when the insolvency was announced, and I have been impressed by the collaboration, commitment and engagement of unions, other government departments, LEP representatives and British Steel, that has culminated in a positive announcements we have seen today.”
