Businesses are being invited to bid for a share of the new £30 million Regional Growth Fund available in the Humber to help bring forward growth plans and build on the Humber’s position as the UK’s energy estuary.

Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP, Minister of State for Business & Enterprise will launch the new fund to businesses across the Humber on Friday 8th February at The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe.

Lord Haskins, Chair of the Humber LEP said:

“This is a huge boost to businesses in theHumber and I urge people to come and talk to us to make a quick assessment as to whether this is the right fund for them to help unlock their growth plans. We can help businesses present their projects in a way that will maximise their chances of gaining funding and ultimately lead to creating jobs here.”

“Securing a Regional Growth Fund grant is a reminder of what can be achieved when businesses and local authorities come together across the Humber.”

The money will is available now after we were selected to receive £30 million of Regional Growth Fund last October, in a bid drawn up by the LEP and North East Lincolnshire Council with support from business leaders and the other Humber local authorities.

It will create 1500 new sustainable jobs, 1450 indirect jobs and at least a further £125 million funding from the private sector.

One strand of the programme is a £10 million programme to support growth of the offshore wind and renewable energy supply chain on the South Bank of the Humber, with grants available to support the development of key infrastructure, new investment, skills and research and development.  It enables businesses to access a similar level of support already available through Regional Growth Funds in Hull & East Yorkshire, building on Green Port Hull investment.

The funds will help accelerate the Grimsby’s position as the UK’s leading centre for long- term offshore wind operations and maintenance servicing to the wind farms, building on investments already made by Siemens, RES and Centrica who have already opened operations and maintenance bases at the Port of Grimsby . This complements the Humber’s broader offer in offshore wind turbine assembly and manufacturing.

Councillor Chris Shaw, Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “We very much welcome the £10 million allocated for the Renewables sector and see that this part of the programme will cement the role of the South bank within the growing offshore wind industry and create sustainable jobs across the area.

“Through Regional Growth Fund we will also be able to accelerate investment and we will work with public and private sector partners across the Humber to achieve this in the renewables and other key industry sectors.”

The second strand of the programme is £20 million available for businesses to exploit expansion opportunities across the Humber area. The Humber LEP will work with local partners to give businesses support to grow and make grants available for business investments such as improvements to property or purchasing new plant machinery, research and development and training.

The £30 million funding pot is available to businesses of any size in the Humber region that can generate sustainable employment and also achieve £4 of private investment to every £1 of grant funding. The minimum amount that can be applied for is £50,000.

The deadline for expressions of interest to apply for a grant is 15th March 2013.  Following this, eligible projects will complete a full application which will be assessed by an Investment Board comprised of private sector business leaders from the Humber.  Priority will be given to bids that fit well with one or more of the Humber LEP’s key objectives set out in the Plan for the Humber.
