The Humber Local Enterprise Partnership is pleased to announce the first three organisations who have been awarded the Humber Gold Standard for Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG). The Gold Standard which is jointly funded by Deflog V Q, Trust and the Humber LEP has been designed for 11-19 schools, academies, colleges and providers in the Humber. There are currently 50 organisations working through the assessments to achieve the Gold Standard.
The three organisations to achieve the Gold Standard are;
East Riding College
Frederick Gough School
Wilberforce Sixth Form College
To achieve the award, the organisations are assessed in eight set criteria, all culminating to delivering the best standard of impartial careers guidance to their young people.
Ofsted’s review of careers guidance ‘Going in the Right Direction’ (2013) highlighted that “it is vitally important that young people have access to good and realistic information and guidance about the full range of career pathways available to them”, however Ofsted evidence portrayed inadequate provision nationally.
The Humber Gold Standard meets employer requirements and is aligned with national CEIAG guidelines and policy. The project was developed following information received that regional careers advice was inconsistent. Employers reported that potential future employees were not aware of the range of career choices available locally and that young people had often taken the wrong pathway in their skills and education developments, leading to a lack of funding when they eventually found the right pathway for them.

The LEP has appointed C&K Careers to support schools and colleges to achieve the Humber Gold Standard. Sally Homer, from C&K comments;
“Achieving the Standard is not an easy process for providers, their provision of CEIAG is rigorously assessed by qualified assessors from C&K Careers against robust criteria that demonstrate the organisation provides its learners with an impartial and high quality programme of careers education information advice and guidance. Achievement of the Standard demonstrates an excellent standard of provision. C&K Careers would like to congratulate the first 3 institutions who have been successful in achieving the standard and will be supporting many more to achieve this high level of CEIAG provision”.
Jo Roche, from Frederick Gough School adds;
“We are absolutely delighted to have achieved the Humber Gold Standard.
The Standard provided a rigorous process which allowed us the opportunity to examine in depth our provision and to map this against the required criteria. . It took a great deal of time to work through the self-assessment framework and to cross reference all of the evidence but it was incredibly interesting to look at this and helpful to identify areas for future development. We were aware that there was already a lot of good practice in our school and working towards the Gold Standard made us realise just how much, and that we really should be proud of all that we do to support our young people.
We are extremely proud to have been successful in the assessment process, especially as one of the first in the Humber region to have done so. It is lovely to have recognition for all of the great work that goes on within Frederick Gough to enable our students to make the best choices for their futures”.
The LEP website includes the publication of a participant register which indicates which schools, colleges and providers have met, or are working towards the standard to inform parental and learner choice. This can be viewed here.
Helen Wooldridge, Director of Learner Services, Planning and Diversity at East Riding College, comments: “We are fully committed to ensuring that young people and adults are provided with high quality information, advice and guidance that enables them to make well-informed decisions about their future. This achievement comes only weeks after the College was rated outstanding by Ofsted for students personal development, which includes the information, advice and guidance provided to them.
“I am delighted that our highly experienced guidance team has passed the very rigorous assessment process and secured the Gold Standard for East Riding College.”
The Gold Standard will also form useful evidence for schools and colleges during inspections as part of the Ofsted Common Inspection Framework.
David Cooper, Principal, from Wilberforce Sixth Form College spoke about their personal experience when working toward the Standard;
“This award is most important for what it says about the quality of support that young people receive in making key decisions about their future. It is certainly the case that young people need to make the most of their talents in securing the highest qualifications, and I think that’s something that we do particularly well at Wilberforce College. But it’s more than that in a fast changing world. Young people need to have a clear understanding of what they need to do to fulfil their ambitions, and develop the skills and qualities to succeed and thrive beyond college, and that’s what this Standard demonstrates of the highest standard at Wilberforce. The Standard states that the support and guidance Wilberforce students receive is outstanding. This is both in choosing their courses to match their ambitions, and then in presenting them to secure the most prestigious and fulfilling positions in employment and education. As the city and region enter upon a new phase of economic and cultural growth, this Standard confirms that the students at Wilberforce receive an outstanding quality of support and guidance that enables them to meet that challenge, and as Principal I am confident that our future is safe in their hands”.
The Humber Gold Standard is just one element of a significant piece of work the Humber LEP has led on by working in partnership with the four local authorities and local provider network to improve access to careers information to raise aspirations and inform resident’s choice. This innovative work has been recognised for its collaborative approach on a wider regional and national level with the LEP presenting the approach at the AOC national conference, South Yorkshire Principals Group and the Inside Government arena.
